The Board has between five and nine members, and according to the Foundation's statute three to five members must be experienced scientists or physicians.

Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. mult. Hans-Jürgen Möller
Hans-Jürgen Möller, born in 1945, studied medicine in Göttingen und Hamburg. He did his training in psychiatry mainly at the Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry in Munich. After his habilitation he became professor and senior physician at the Psychiatric Clinic of the Technical University of Munich. From 1988 to 1994 he was professor of psychiatry and director of the Psychiatric Clinic of the University of Bonn and from 1994 to 2012 professor of psychiatry and director of the Psychiatric Clinic of the Munich University. He is the member of numerous professional societies and was the editor of several scientific journals. Among others, he was president of the World Federation of Socities of Biological Psychiatry, the European Psychiatric Association, and the Collegium Internationale Neuropsychopharmacologicum. In recognition of his achievements he has received numerous honours and awards, including the Jean Delay Prize as well as the Lifetime Achievement Award from the World Psychiatric Association.
Bernd Kriegeskorte
Bernd Kriegeskorte, born in 1943, studied law and economics at the Ludwig- Maximilians University in Munich. Since 1973 he worked for the Dresdner Bank AG in Munich and Frankfurt; then from 1985 until 1990 in the management of this bank in Darmstadt and from 1991 until 2005 in the same position again in Munich. Between 2000 and 2005 he was Speaker and Head of the Management of corporate clients in the region of Bavaria. He was a member of numerous corporate boards, among others Dresdner Bank AG, Augustinum gGmbH, Thuringia Versicherungs-AG, Rathgeber AG, Arabella Hotel Holding AG, and Bayerische Börse AG (Bavarian Stock Exchange).
Prof. Dr. rer nat. Dr. h.c. Christian Haass
Christian Haass, born in 1960, studied biology at Heidelberg University and received his doctorate in 1989. In 1990 he moved to Harvard Medical School, where he was Assistant Professor of Neurology between 1993 and 1995. Afterwards he was Professor of Molecular Biology at the Central Institute for Mental Health in Mannheim. Since 1999 he has been Head of the Department of Metabolic Biochemistry at the Adolf Butenandt Institute of the Munich University , and in addition, since 2009 Speaker of the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) located in Munich. He received numerous honours, such as the Leibniz Award of the German Research Foundation (DFG), the Potamkin Award of the American Academy of Neurology, the MetLife Foundation Award, and in 2010 an Honorary Doctorate from Zürich University. Since 2000 he has organised the annual Eibsee Meeting, the most important international Alzheimer conference in Germany.
Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Eckhard Mandelkow
Eckhard Mandelkow, born 1943, studied physics at the universities in Braunschweig, New Orleans, and Hamburg and received his doctorate in biophysics from Heidelberg University in 1973. Between 1974 and 1976 he was a post-doc at the Brandeis University (USA) and between 1977 and 1985 researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg, where he habilitated in 1981. Since 1986 he has been Speaker of the Max Planck Research Unit for Structural Molecular Biology at the DESY in Hamburg, since 1999 Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society, and since 2011 Head of the research group “Structural Principles of Neurodegeneration” at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) located in Bonn. In 2010 he received the Metlife Award for Alzheimer Research and in 2011 the Potamkin Award of the American Academy of Neurology (both together with his wife, Dr. Eva-Maria Mandelkow).
Prof. Dr. med. Michael Sendtner
Michael Sendtner, born in 1959, studied medicine in Regensburg and then at the Technical University München, where he received his doctorate in 1984 and where he habilitated in 1992. From 1985 and 1994 he worked at the Max Planck Institute for Neurobiology in Martinsried before moving to Würzburg University where he was Professor for Neurobiology from 1995 till 1999. Since 2000 he has been Head of the Institute for Clinical Neurobiology at the University Hospital in Würzburg and Speaker of the Comprehensive Research Center “Molecular Models for Diseases of the Nervous System”. Among other awards, he received the Myopathy Award in 1993 and the ALS Research Award in 1997, both from the German Society for Muscular Diseases, and in 2007 the Sobek Award for multiple sclerosis research. Since 2011 he has been a member (neuroscience) of the Senate of the German Research Foundation.
Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Klaus Thurau
Klaus Thurau, born in 1928, studied medicine at the universities of Erlangen and Kiel, where he received his doctorate, and he habilitated at Göttingen University. In 1965 he moved to the Physiological Institute of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich and was director of the institute from 1968 till 1998. He is a member of various scientific societies in the field of physiology and nephrology as well as editor of several international scientific journals. In recognition of his scientific and academic work he has received numerous honours, such as the Franz Volhard Medal of the German Society of Nephrology, the Homer W. Smith Award of the American Society of Nephrology, the A.N. Richards Award of the International Society of Nephrology, the Purkynie Medal of the Czech Academy of Sciences, an honorary doctorate from the Semmelweis University in Budapest, and the German Federal Order of Merit 1st Class.
